Profitability for Agencies and Firms

August 27, 2026

Profitability is where tracked time turns into a number the business cares about. Rize now calculates revenue, cost, and profit across your whole organization, without anyone filling in a timesheet first.

Rize profitability trend of revenue, cost, and profit with top contracts

WHAT IS IT?

Profitability combines four inputs: the time Rize captured automatically, each client's billing contract, each member's cost rate, and any expenses or budgets you add. From those it reports revenue, cost, and profit at the client, project, and member level, for one team or for the whole organization.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Most agencies and firms find out a client is unprofitable at the end of the quarter, after the hours were under-reported and the retainer was over-served. Because Rize captures the work as it happens, the margin is visible while there is still time to change scope, staffing, or price.

NEW

Organization-wide profitability

The organization Profitability page rolls up every team. Org admins and members with the Finance grant can filter by team and date range and see revenue, cost, and profit for every client without opening each team separately.

Hourly, retainer, and hybrid contracts

Rize contract detail with billing periods and margin trend

Each client has a contract that says how revenue is earned. Hourly contracts multiply tracked billable hours by a rate. Retainers recognize a fixed amount across the billing period. Hybrid contracts combine a retainer with an hourly rate for hours beyond the included amount. Contracts have billing periods, so you can see how a retainer is tracking against the hours delivered in the current month.

Cost rates per member

The Costs tab lists every member with their billable rate and cost rate, editable in place. Cost rates are what turn hours into cost, so this is the one setup step that makes every margin number real.

Budgets and expenses

Set a budget per client or project and watch burn against it. Add pass-through and delivery expenses so profit reflects more than labor.

Profitability in the Agent, reports, API, and MCP

Ask the Rize Agent which client had the lowest margin last month, run the client profitability report template on a schedule, or pull the same numbers through the API and MCP with organization_profitability, contract_profitability, and profitability_trend.

USE IT FOR

  • Monthly margin review by client
  • Spotting over-served retainers before the period closes
  • Pricing renewals from real delivery cost
  • Giving a finance lead the numbers without admin access
  • Feeding profitability into your own reporting through the API

Profitability is available to organization admins and members with the Finance grant. See Profitability Overview in the docs for setup.
